Fancy Felt Flower DIY

Sue, of Giant Dwarf shared this tutorial on Martha Stewart's craft blog, and I have been dying to try it for weeks now! I finally decided to give it a go. Instead of taking her photos, I decided to share a few of my own crafting adventure, but for the full tutorial and flower petal template, you can go here; I just eyeballed it^_^

Supplies //
felt ( I bought mine here)
small branches
scissors
hot glue

Step One //
Cut your felt into heart shapes for your flower petals and leaf shapes for your leaves (go figure). I used anywhere from 3 petals to 7 petals, depending on how fluffy I wanted the bloom!

Step Two //
Take your hot glue gun and dap a line along the bottom of the heart shape, then stick it onto the tip of your branch. Leave room for the end of your branch to show through the top. Then continue adding petals accordingly. Also, please excuse my tooootally chipping nail polish (shame).

Step Three //
Attach your leaves using the same method as step three. These can be placed anywhere on your branch. Get creative and add several of them!

Step Four //
Tie up your pretty new bouquet with a ribbon or yarn! Stick them in a vase or jar and you're all set! Enjoy!

in the details.

In light of my last post, I decided to battle ye old creative block by taking a moment to appreciate the little things in life. It's the tiny details that really inspire and help me to appreciate the beauty around me. These were all glimpses at my day and I feel happy knowing that all this loveliness surrounds me! How was your day?? Did you take time to appreciate the little things?

ten ways to battle creative block

As of late I've been experiencing creative block, thus the angry letter in my last post. I don't like these times, but I understand that they are necessary for growth and this last week has been really beneficial. I decided to compile a list during this time to help shed light on ways we can, not necessarily avoid the creative block, but get ourselves through them!

Clean up your space. A new workspace can be entirely inspiring and can do wonders for the creative process. I decided to clean up my room today; I drew back my curtains, let the light on in, grabbed some flowers and put them in a jar, and made a new display on my nightstand - instantly I felt refreshed. Cleaning up your work area can give you a fresh new perspective; clutter sometimes clouds the mind. Start fresh!

Take a step outside. If you want to be inspired, simply look at the world around you! I draw most of my inspiration from nature and pretty drives by myself. Paying attention to the little details in daily life can do wonders! I'll be sharing a post on this later.

Pick up some magazines. I like looking at pretty things. Sometimes great ideas stem from other great ideas. I love looking at ads and photography found in magazines; they help me strive to create work that's just as inspiring. A few of my favorites are NylonFrankie, and Vogue.

Make a new playlist. Music always inspires me and sometimes a new song can spur on a hundred new ideas! Take an hour and get lost in itunes; pick up a few new songs and make a mix and just sit back and listen. Lyrics and great melodic lines are always a great source of inspiration for me.

Spend time with loved ones. Sometimes we get entirely too wrapped up in creating or blogging that we simply lose touch. It's good to take a little break for a night or sometimes even a week and just "get away". Spending time with friends and family, just laughing and not worrying about getting photos of the night or thinking up new ideas, can be relaxing and extremely enjoyable.

Go blog surfing. Take a break from your blog and just go enjoy reading and looking at other blogs. Seeing other peoples' fabulous work always motivates me to create work that I'm proud of. In case you're looking for some good reads, a few of my faves are Bleubird, Busy Bee Lauren, Maie Dae, and Roots & Feathers.

Craft for fun. I know how easy it can be to get caught up crafting to work, so I think it's extra important to craft for the joy of it! After you've done the tip above, pick a diy and do it just for fun. you don't need to blog about it, you don't need to take photos of it, just simply make it because it's pretty and you like it! The next one on my to do list is Kinsey's jewelry box that I listed in my week's favorites!

Go on an adventure. Do something that you've never done before; no matter how challenging or not it may be. Sometimes getting out of the box means getting out of our comfort zone and experiencing something new. This allows you to create new memories and draw from a special moment in your life. You try not to be inspired after experiencing something new for the very first time! I love using Groupon for good ideas!

Journal and doodle. Doing this can be so relaxing and enjoyable. I love doodling and dreaming up pretty things; sometimes it can mean writing a poem or drawing flowers... whatever it is, grabbing a sketchbook and getting your thoughts on paper can do wonders! I love using my moleskin the most because it's easy to tote!

Just sit and breathe. Accept the fact that you are experiencing a creative block. Understand that it is an opportunity for growth and rise to the occasion. Sometimes I like to light a few candles and just sit on my bed. I don't play any music, I try and wipe out all distractions and I just clear my mind. This doesn't have to be for hours or anything weird, just a few minutes... and then I grab my computer and write out whatever comes out first. Some of my most favorite posts have been a result of this.

I'm sure there are tons more that one can do to get past the creative block, but this is what has and is currently working for me. Hope it helps if you're currently experiencing this, and if not then feel free to use it when and if the time ever comes! Here's to a happy creative week!

a silly note

Dear creative block,

you are much too large and are keeping me from accomplishing much more than I am, currently. You sir are a dark cloud on an otherwise bright sunny day. I simply don't know what to do with you; you fill my blog with an empty void that does not inspire, does not invoke feelings of joy or peace, but brings about disdain, frustration and overall ickyness. Yep, ickyness. I don't like you. There, I said it. I don't think you're necessary, though I admire your perseverance, I cannot, will not, stop creating. So, any time you feel like moving along, I would much appreciate it and would be fine with seeing you off. Don't get me wrong, I'm not angry with you; you challenge me and push me to endure and push on past you, but it doesn't change the facts. The fact is, I'm stronger than you and soon, we will no longer co exist. Sorry you don't have any friends, but currently I'm seeking friendship with inspiration and creativity and last I heard, y'all weren't on good terms. So in closing, it's been real, but you got to get! I'm over you.

Sincerely,
Melisa

Y'all ever have creative block?? Yep, there's one right up in my face. I'm going to hit the refresh button on my life and hopefully come back with something new and exciting. Thanks for your patience.

A Post About Random Goodness

Last night was so amazing. Let me tell you why...

Last night the Mr and I, along with youth leaders and church family, launched our student ministry SPARK! For a little less than a year, we've been growing this ministry; taking it from small groups, which at first meant three students in a living room with a bunch of leaders, to 93 at last night's Launch Service. God is amazing. When I try and understand incredible things like that and how they possibly could've happened, and how I actually get to take part in, I'm just blown away at how good God is. We couldn't have done it without Him, without Elisha's obedience and willingness to do whatever it took, without  the time, energy and constant devotion from our leaders, or without the constant prayers of every one of our leaders and church family. I'm just so grateful. What takes my awe of God to a whole other level is that I know that I know, that this was just the beginning. We're only getting started.

I got home after the long and glorious night of wonderfulness only to find that I could not sleep. like for the life of me it just was not happening. So I did what any sane person would do; I sat up in my bad, grabbed my laptop and started to work on a design project. I designed and designed until I finished an entire new layout, for the most darling girl ever, at about 6am. I was so proud of my work though. The kind of proud where you step back and say, "yeah, I did that!" knowing how many hours you put in, how much sleep you lost and how it's all worth it because somehow you brought to life a look, an idea, a brand, that once did not exist, but now does. If you'd like to see the full design or you're in need of some yummy recipes, hop on over to Whipped!

This was not last night, but it's still something I'd like to share. As I've stated previously, I have pretty insanely talented friends. They're so talented and that a few of them decided to go and make an album. They're cool like that. They're called Animal Family Singers and they're pretty great. They just released their album and it can be found on iTunes, so yeah... go give it a listen!

That's my random post of fun and exciting news and stories. Keep in mind I'm running on four hours of sleep and my brain usually requires eight to function properly; so I guess I'm at 50% batter life right now. OH before I forget, have you taken a look at the lovely new faces on the left sidebar?? You should! They are pretty faces and they have lovely blogs/stores. Won't you go say hi to them?
