How to balance the creative with the daily

Have you ever felt like you were living two lives?? Like during the day you're worker, student, mom, etc... and then every other free moment you're crafter and blogger extraordinaire?? I know how difficult it can be at times to want to do one thing, but have to do another (ie work instead of sit at home blogging all the livelong day). It's tough being a blogger and a full time worker; it's even more difficult when you have other responsibilities as well. I'm no expert by any means, but I have found several things that have helped me through the years and things I'm having to resort back to now that I've started my full time job. I just thought I'd share these helpful tips with you, in case you may be struggling in this area.

1. You don't need to blog every single day. I know that this is difficult because I feel like I owe it to my readers to have something awesome to say, or to show pretty pictures or something else equally inspiring every day, but sometimes it's just not realistic. Sometimes the day simply has no free minutes and we have to remind ourselves that the blog world will go on. Your blog will be there the next day and the next and yes, your readers will be to. Maybe try not to make it a habit, but if you miss a few days here and there, the world will not implode.

2. Take photos of the little things. Sometimes we may feel like we can only post about our day if it's terribly exciting or there's an actual event, and so it's frustrating when we find ourselves only going to work and having a few hours at home... take photos of the little things throughout your day that make everything worth it; a yummy chai tea, a pretty sunrise, your new nailpolish, etc. Capturing these moments will not only allow you to share your day in a unique way, but also inspire you throughout the day.

3. Plan. We all know I love love to plan. Sometimes our lack of time comes from lack of planning. No one wants to live by a schedule, but it really is the most productive way to accomplish everything you need to. When I know I have a lot to do, I will grab a pen and paper and write out my to do's, then I'll list them in order of "Need to Get Done", then I list out my day by time and plug those things in accordingly. Sometimes things get left off and have to get done another day, but that's completely fine. Setting a schedule will help you utilize all the time you have and allow you to do the things you actually enjoy doing.

4. You make time for the things you care about. I love to craft and I love to blog, but I will never substitute time with family or friends to do either of those things. This was a promise I made myself in the very beginning. I never wanted to be so consumed with writing about my life that I wasn't enjoying the experience of those things. In the same regard, if blogging is your passion then you will cut out time for it, if that means you miss that episode of New Girl this week then so be it, or if it means you need to multitask and eat while you type, then do it! Whatever it takes.

5. Don't stretch yourself too thin. It's okay to say no. If you're like me, then you want to take on the world everyday, no matter what it means. I kind of strive on stressful situations (that's not terribly healthy) so I will usually say yes to everything asked of me. Also I'm a bit of a people pleaser, so that doesn't help. I think it's extremely important to make a list (surprise surprise) of your priorities, and list as many as you think is realistically possible to make important in your life. I'd say 4-5 is normal. My list goes like this: God, family/friends, work, ministry, personal time (craft, blog, etc). I'm not saying that's the best order and honestly sometimes it depends on the day, but those are the things of importance to me and things that I know I can have time for on a daily basis.

I feel like there's so many more things to help us balance our time, but these are the ones that help me the most; it's not a recipe for the perfect well balanced life, but it is a start. Good luck and if you have any tips, share them below, I'd love to hear them!

bits + pieces

I really enjoy sewing. I'm not a pro or anything, but I find it relaxing and extremely rewarding. I was so excited when my sweet friend Kalli asked me to make bowties for the groomsmen in her upcoming wedding. I love love taking part in wedding crafts. I mostly like the idea of creating something uniquely for the couple; something remembered in the photographs that will be cherished throughout their marriage. It's quite the responsibility, but as I said; very rewarding.

I spent the last two days working on these lovelies and I think they came out great. I had only ever made the Mr. one bowtie before, so I was a little nervous, but it wasn't terribly difficult. I'm thinking of adding a few to the shop! I have a few friends who have been anxiously awaiting me to say those words, haha!

You'll have to forgive my absence these last few days. Not only was I tediously working on all of these, but I've also been trying to prepare for my upcoming craft show! So many new things being added and lots of little details that need working out. I'm excited, but slowly getting exhausted. This upcoming week might kill me. I hope it doesn't, because I'd really really like to make it to Friday night to watch the HUNGER GAMES! hooray! Are you going to the midnight showing??

alive and well

This past month has been just a whirlwind of life changing events. Over the last few days, a number of insanely exciting things have taken place and I want to share with you, so I'm going to do that thing where I word vomit all over this post. Work for you?? Yay for excitement!

First off, I got a job! I've had several side job type things since graduating, but I got offered a pretty nice position last week and have decided to take it! hooray!

Yesterday, I bought a car!! (and there was much rejoicing) If you don't know what kind of car I had previously, it isn't terribly exciting news. So in order for you to fully appreciate this statement let me tell you about Lucinda. Lucinda was (and still is) a 2001 gold Pontiac Grand Am. She was given to me by my loving father my Junior year of high school in 2005. She was a dream come true at this point. Over the years I was good to her and she was good to me, but she got sick (so to speak) and began to die a slow and painful death. Her windows wouldn't roll up or down so folders were wedged in to keep them in place, someone knocked her side mirror off so duct tape was used for a few weeks until we finally just took it off completely, she had an odd clicking sound in her cd player, she would leak along the door every time it rained, causing puddles in the floor, when at a stop or incline, and she would often stall out and die (which was awesome)... these are only the major issues she dealt with, but I wouldn't want to shame her completely by sharing every painful detail of her inadequacy. Truth is, she was a good car and she got me to the point in my life where I would be able to purchase a new car, and for that I am grateful. Do you think I'm insane for naming my car and referring to her as a "she"? Well don't, cause I'm not. I just know how lame life would've been with no car, so I'm happy I had one and I'm even happier that I have a much more superior one. Humble beginnings. OH, silly me, I didn't even share what my new car is; a Hyundai Tucson GLS. It is love.

I shared with you a few weeks ago that I would be participating in a craft festival called Walk the Light on March 24th, and they have since put together an artist page! If you want to check it out and see my bio, you can go here

And since we're on the topic of craft fairs, I'm very very (VERY) happy to announce that Pie N' the Sky will be at this year's Renegade Craft Fair in Austin!!! If you live anywhere in the Texas area, I definitely think you should come! And if you are from far away then hop on a plane and come anyway! We will be there May 19-20; I hope you can make it, I would just love to meet all of you!!

That's it friends! It's a whole lot to take in and sometimes I sit back and think "is this really my life?" I'm happy things work out; if this past month or so has taught me anything, it's that God is faithful. He doesn't forget about us and He'll see us through to the very end, blessing us with so much that we don't deserve. Hope you have a lovely day!
